Choosing the correct platform to run a web-based solution takes a lot of thought and time choosing the right equipment for the task. As with all web servers it comes down to reliability and performance and to this end we use Dell™ PowerEdge™ 2950 Servers
We have configured all our servers with 2 Dual Core Xeon Pro 5410 (4Mb Cache, 2,3Ghz, 1333Mhz) processors and 8Gb of DDR-2 533Mhz ECC 2R Fully Buffered Memory. All servers run Microsoft Windows Enterprise Server 2003 (and Microsoft SQL Server as the database), which is Microsoft’s most reliable Operating System. This will allow us the power we need to host any number of enterprise sites on the servers with little or no performance loss. This is of course very important, as we need the servers to be running 24x7. All of our servers have been configured with high-level redundancy, including dual power supplies; hot swap disks, multiple processors and multiple cooling fans.

Each of our servers will accommodate 680Gb of drive space utilising six 146Gb 10K RPM SAS hard drives configured in a Raid5 architecture with hot swappable fail over disks. These are backed up nightly, via a Dell™ PowerVault™ 110T LT03 Tape Drive and our 800Gb Backup Tapes are taken off site weekly, as well as having daily disk backups.

In order to take advantage of our comprehensive Content Management System the website will need to be hosted on our servers. We can look after all elements of a website from domain names, to email addresses and web site hosting.
